Pepe to be offered new contract by Real Madrid
Real Madrid are set to offer defender Pepe a new one-year contract extension, according to AS.
The 31-year-old, who joined Real from FC Porto in 2007, has 12 months left on his current deal and Real are hopeful of closing a deal before he is able to talk to other clubs about joining on a free transfer from January.
Pepe has become a mainstay in the Real Madrid team in recent years, although he missed nearly half of Real’s league games last season through injury. He has formed a formidable partnership in the centre of defence with captain Sergio Ramos, the pair playing 795 games for Los Blancos between them.
The Portugal international was also integral in his nation’s maiden international trophy success as they lifted the European Championships trophy, beating hosts France in the final.
AS also say the contract extension could be confirmed within the next seven days, just in time for the start of the league season.
Pepe has helped Real to 11 league and cup titles in his nine years at the club so far, including two Champions League successes in 2014 and last season.
