Atletico Madrid sealed their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League as they held Leicester 1-1 at the King Power Stadium.
Saul Niguez’s first-half header was enough to secure their place in the next round for the away side as they await tomorrow’s results to find out their next opponents.
Leicester put up a stern fight but were unable to beat the Spanish outfit, who won 2-1 on aggregate.
The La Liga outfit opened the scoring when Filipe Luis’ cross found it’s way to Saul at the back post and he thumped home a header into the bottom corner.
Leicester levelled the score in the 61st minute on the night. Ben Chilwell fired the ball across goal and Jamie Vardy was on hand to slot the ball in.
Atletico were able to hold on with the help of some stoic defending at the back, from Stefan Savic in particular, to keep Leicester out.
Here is how we rated Diego Simeone’s side…
Jan Oblak: 7
Nothing to do. Handling was safe and secure.
Juanfran: 7
Solid up until he went off early in the second-half. Although he did look like he was beginning to struggle against Ben Chilwell.
Diego Godin: 8
Excellent performance from Godin as usual. One of the best defenders in the world.
Stefan Savic: 9
Incredible display from Savic. Made countless tackles and blocks to defend his goal, dominant in the air. Sublime.
Filipe Luis: 8
Provided the assist for the goal and was sound defensively.
Jose Gimenez: 8
Superb display from the defensive midfielder. Snuffed out Leicester attacks all night and worked tirelessly.
Gabi: 7
Solid in the centre of the park. Won the ball, kept it simple. Easy.
Saul Niguez: 8
Scored the all important goal, fantastic header and won tackles in the midfield to break up play.
Koke: 6
Very quiet game. Little to do. Worked hard.
Yannick Carrasco: 6
Looked bright on the ball but did fail to connect to a good cut-back from Griezmann in the second half, with the goal gaping.
Antoine Griezmann: 6
Struggled to get into the game. Showed flashes of quality, but not enough to deserve a high rating.
