Atletico Madrid enjoy success at La Liga awards
Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann was named La Liga’s best player of the 2015/2016 season at the league’s awards ceremony on Monday evening.
The Frenchman capped off a wonderful season for Atletico by performing well for France in Euro 2016 and he has been awarded for such form by being handed the La Liga best player award.
The award, which Griezmann beat both Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo to, capped off a superb evening for Atletico, seeing them win four awards in total.
Diego Simeone was named coach of the year, whilst Jan Oblak was crowned keeper of the year and Diego Godin, defender of the year.
Messi did come away with one award, being named the best attacker, whilst Real’s Luka Modric was named the best midfielder.
Marco Asensio, who was on loan at Espanyol from Real last season, was named breakthrough player of the year.
The awards come before the FIFA Ballon d’Or which will be announced at the end of the year, likely to include the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and potentially Griezmann with a chance of winning.
In total after the nominees were released for the prestigious award on Tuesday evening, La Liga sees 13 of its players included in the 30-man shortlist.
