Copa del Rey: Cultural Leonesa 1-7 Real Madrid
Real Madrid thrashed third-tier Cultural Leonesa in the first leg of the Copa del Rey round of 32.
The fixture was the only Copa game played this week due to Madrid’s participation in this year’s FIFA World Club Cup in December.
Boss Zinedine Zidane chose therefore to rest the likes of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and the much discussed Cristiano Ronaldo, giving youngster Marco Asensio a chance to further enhance his reputation.
Madrid took the lead early on through former West Bromwich Albion defender Gianni Zuiverloon, who scored an unfortunate own-goal.
Asensio then burst into action, netting two, adding to two from in-form Alvaro Morata, who now has three goals in his last two games.
The young duo now sit top of Madrid’s top scorers chart, ahead of Benzema, Bale and Ronaldo.
Defender Nacho scored a superb volley to make it 6-0, before the third-tier side found something to celebrate when Benja pulled one back.
Mariano scored late on to make it a resounding victory and one that all-but sees Los Blancos through to the last-16.
The second leg at the Bernabeu is on Wednesday, 30 November.
